5 Dental Myths Debunked!

Dentist North RydeNowadays, we are blessed to have the luxury of the Internet available in the palm of our hands. You can simply go online, check on Google, and whatever question you have, it has the answer for you.

However, it is not always that this information is correct.

Here we have 5 common dental myths that we so often hear at North Ryde Dentistry and the explanations we can share with you to let you know why these are untrue!

Myth # 1: Sugar causes cavities

While sugar can contribute to cavities, it is the bacteria that eat these sugars that are the main culprit. Sugar that builds up on the tooth surface attracts bacteria and these break down the tooth enamel to cause tooth decay and cavities.

Myth # 2: Brushing harder cleans the teeth better

Brushing your teeth harder actually causes more bad than good, especially to the gums. It pushes the gums away from the teeth causing unsightly gum recession and it also makes your gums more prone to bleeding.

Gentle toothbrushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush should be enough to remove plaque and tartar for good teeth cleaning.

Myth # 3: Flossing causes gaps between the teeth

Flossing is a very important part of your oral health routine as the dental floss will reach between the teeth to remove any food debris stuck in between. It does not cause teeth gaps. In fact, this will prevent the decay of teeth and keep your oral health in excellent condition!

Myth # 4: White teeth mean they are healthy

As you age, it is very normal that the teeth turn a kind of yellowish hue. This does not mean that the teeth are damaged. Usually, pristine white teeth are only a product of teeth whitening.

But, if you have stained or discoloured teeth, it is best to talk to your dentist North Ryde so you can understand why.

Myth # 5: Dental visits are only necessary if you feel pain

Our North Ryde dentist actually recommends dental visits every 6 months and this is to maintain good oral health. During your regular dental appointment, you will have your dental check-up and teeth cleaning.

These are preventative dental treatments that can help avoid dental issues. Also, these visits are important so your dentist Ryde can identify dental problems before it gets worse.

To speak to our dentist Macquarie Park about more of your oral health concerns and the best way to address your dental issues, call North Ryde Dentistry today for an appointment. We set personalised treatment plans targeted to your individual needs so you can have a brighter and healthier smile!
